Most residents have been let back into a Harlem building after a fire ripped through several floors Friday evening.
The fire started just after 5 p.m. in an apartment on the 5th floor of a building on 112th Street and Saint Nicolas Avenue.
The blaze quickly spread upwards, forcing an evacuation of the entire building.
Six apartments were severely damaged by the flames.
Fire officials said clutter in the apartment where the blaze started made it difficult to put out.
“We have an apartment that we call, where the person has a lot of stuff, it’s extremely difficult to move through the apartment, and, you know, it’s extremely difficult to get to the scene of the fire. All of the apartment was basically on fire,” said Deputy Assistant Chief Mark Ferran of the New York City Fire Department.
“There was smoke coming out of the window and I let some guys in, and they ran through the building, trying to get people out. And then I came outside probably 10 minutes later,” said one resident.
Officials said no residents were hurt, but two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The Red Cross is providing at least six families with emergency housing.
