City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito discussed her human papillomavirus, or HPV, diagnosis with reporters for the first time.
Over the weekend, the speaker posted on twitter she had been diagnosed with quote “high-risk HPV”—the country’s most common sexually transmitted infection that can lead to cervical cancer.
Speaking at City Hall she talked about it in detail.
Mark-Viverito said she was compelled to tell her story to raise awareness about the HPV vaccine and also the importance of seeing a doctor regularly.
“I am a private person so these decisions are not easy, but there is a lot of stuff that is stigmatized in our society and I think it is the role of us who are public figures to de-stigmatize. This is an issue that is a concern. There is a debate going on right now whether parents should vaccinate their children, both girls and boys,” Mark-Viverito said.
Mark-Viverito did undergo additional tests since making her Sunday night announcement.
She says she is waiting for those results.
