Park Slope Gets More Pre-K Spots Due to High Demand

New pre-kindergarten spots are opening up in one Brooklyn neighborhood just two weeks before the start of the school year.

The Department of Education says it’s opening three additional pre-k classes in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn area as a result of high demand and limited options.

The new program will be the first self-contained pre-k center run by the DOE.

The principal of nearby PS 10 will oversee the program which will include 126 four-year-olds.

Parents say they feel lucky to have another opportunity to get their children enrolled in pre-k.

“We’re super excited. My husband and I were like, ‘Yay, yay, yay we might be able to get in!’” said one parent.

“I had applied to like 15 schools and we were so disappointed when, you know, the day came and he didn’t get into any program. So, you know, we just feel fortunate that something’s opened up,” said another parent.

“It’s very hard. It’s almost like applying for college. It’s crazy,” added a third parent.

The program will be housed in the former Bishop Ford High School building.

It will be filled using a random lottery system.

Parents and children are able to apply over the next week at PS 10.

In total, the DOE says 53,000 city children will attend pre-kindergarten this year.
