City Council members announce a plan to support food pantries across the five boroughs.
The $ 1.3 million initiative will boost pantries, food banks and soup kitchens.
The group also announced the “Fill Up the Food Banks” drive in honor of Mother Teresa’s 104th birthday.
Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito says members will host 33 separate drives over the next week.
“Nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers—that’s 1 in 5 of our children—are threatened by hunger and by lack of access to quality, nutritious food,” Mark-Viverito said.
“Well I don’t think people realize how serious hunger in the city is, and I don’t think people realize that we have children and seniors who go to bed hungry—who don’t know where their next meal is coming from,” said City Councilman James Vacca.
Vacca says he hopes the initiative will garner donations, and raise awareness and support to fight hunger.
