Tourist Who Climbed Up Brooklyn Bridge Held on Bail

A Russian tourist is being held on $ 5,000 bail after appearing in court Monday following his ascent up the Brooklyn Bridge this past weekend.

Yaroslav Kolchin, 24, is charged with reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing.

He surrendered his passport since he cannot pay the bail and is due back in court on Friday.

Police noticed the 24-year-old climbing a support beam connected to the tower on the Brooklyn side of the bridge shortly after 12 p.m. Sunday.

He made it to the top of the tower where he walked around taking photos with his iPhone.

New Yorkers who spoke with NY1 say the security breach is worrisome.

“I’m worried, I’m concerned. The Brooklyn Bridge is one of our greatest treasures and we need to keep an eye on it,” said one concerned New Yorker.

“It seems like lately there has been ever since the white flag went up there’s always cops and stuff. So, I don’t know how that one slipped under but it seems pretty safe,” said another New Yorker.

This is the second notable breach at the bridge this summer.

Back on July 22, two German artists climbed the bridge and replaced the American flags on both towers with bleached American flags.

They said it was in tribute to the bridge’s architect.
