Brooklyn Man Arraigned on Upgraded Charges in 3-Year-Old’s Death

A Brooklyn man who remains hospitalized was arraigned in court Wednesday to face upgraded charges, days after the death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter.

Kelsey Smith, 20, was arraigned via closed circuit television on second degree murder charges in the death of Jeida Torres.

Police say Smith beat the 3-year-old to death while watching the little girl and her 5-year-old brother.

It happened Saturday at a homeless shelter in Bushwick.

Family members tell NY1 Smith claimed to have gone too far in punishing the child for wetting herself.

The arraignment comes as the Administration for Childrens Services has apparently opened a case against the girl’s mother, Kimberly Torres Smith, for alleged neglect.

The medical examiner ruled Jeida’s death a homicide on Monday, saying she died from blunt impact injuries to her head and torso.

Police say her 5-year-old brother was also beaten.
