Driver flees after striking pedestrian in Queens

A driver who struck a pedestrian in Astoria initially tried to help the elderly man to his feet, then fled after a witness yelled “don’t touch him!”

Three cars then chased the driver, who was stopped nearby and placed in police custody.

The incident was reported at 5:39 p.m.Tuesday at the intersection of 44th street and 25th avenue, authorities said.

The pedestrian, an elderly Italian man who lives nearby, was bleeding from his ears and head after being hit by the white sport utility vehicle, according to witness Lilly Skorpanic, who works on the corner at Gaspar’s Deli.

“I saw the driver get out of the car and go to pick up the man, who had to be in his 80s,” Skorpanic told The Post. “Then somebody yelled at him, ‘Don’t touch him! Leave him there!’

“That’s when I saw him let the guy’s hand go,” Skorpanic added. “He was wearing this gray business suit, so I figured he was a gentlemen, a professional, who would know what to do. But he just panicked and ran off.”

The pedestrian was taken to Elmhurst Hospital.
