Fire marshals say candles left unattended caused Monday night’s fire in Queens that left two children dead.
The flames broke out shortly after 7 p.m. on the first floor of a house located at 188-15 Tioga Drive in Saint Albans.
The fire was under control within an hour.
Firefighters discovered 6-year-old Andrew Kavanagh and his brother, 11-year-old John Kavanagh, unconscious on the second floor.
“Both were removed from the building. Both were in cardiac arrest. CPR was initiated on them by firefighters on the scene, subsequently transferred to EMS where they were transported to Queens General Hospital. At approximately 20:25 hours both children were pronounced, were pronounced deceased,” said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief James Leonard.
Fire investigators say there were also no smoke detectors on the first and second floors of the home, and those in the basement failed to activate.
Sources say the children were alone in the apartment.
They also say a 33-year-old man who was renting out the attic jumped from a window and suffered minor injuries.
Two other tenants in the basement got out safely.
