Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm went head-to-head with his Democratic challenger Domenic Recchia for the first time Wednesday at a Brooklyn forum.
The two clashed over immigration, taxes and the congressman’s 20-count federal indictment during a debate in Bay Ridge.
Grimm painted Recchia as an uber-liberal, aligned with Mayor Bill de Blasio and out of touch with his constituents.
Recchia focused his attacks on Grimm’s 20-count federal indictment.
He was charged in April for with fraud and tax evasion.
“How are you going to serve this district when you don’t have power anymore in congress with all of these pending investigations and the trial coming up. How are you going to serve this community?” Recchia asked.
“Everyone is entitled to their day in court and as a United States marine I fought for that constitutional right. So I’ll have my day in court,” Grimm responded.
Grimm and Recchia will face off again Wednesday night in a debate focused on jobs and the economy.
