Man Accused of Beating Stepdaughter to Death to Face Second-Degree Murder Charge

The man accused of beating his 3-year-old stepdaughter to death will be charged with second-degree murder, according to the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office.

Kelsey Smith, 20, was previously charged with assault and injuring a minor.

The medical examiner on Monday ruled Jeida Torres’ death a homicide, saying she died of blunt impact injuries to the head and torso.

Authorities say Smith was watching his two stepchildren on Saturday at a homeless shelter in Bushwick.

Investigators say they were called after Jeida was found beaten to death.

Mark Almodovar, a family friend, said Smith called him, telling him he accidentally went too far while trying to punish the little girl for wetting herself.

“‘I think I killed the girl. I think I killed the baby,’” Almodovar said. “‘She’s on the floor, and she’s not moving.’ So he tried to give her chest compressions, right, and when give her chest compressions, I think he probably made her stop breathing.”

Police say Jeida’s 5-year-old brother was also beaten. He is in stable condition at the hospital.

Smith has yet to be charged as a result of the brother’s injuries.
