Mayor Bill de Blasio signs a bill requiring the Department of Education to provide graduation rates for students in foster care.
Under the new law, high school enrollment and graduation rates for the previous school year must be recorded by October 1st each year.
Council Member Laurie Cumbo, a sponsor of the bill said in part that, under the law,
“We can monitor the academic progression of our City’s most vulnerable population to ensure that these young men and women will excel beyond their circumstances…We need to know whether they are pursuing higher education, able to secure employment, and earn a living wage to avoid poverty.”
According to the Administration for Children’s Services, there are over 10,000 children in foster care in the city.
