Queens Housing Complex Loses Power

Power has been restored to a Queens housing complex after an outage affected multiple buildings.

The Rochdale Village complex in Jamaica went dark around 3 p.m. Wednesday due to problems with an in-house power plant, affecting approximately 6,000 apartments, according to the FDNY.

FDNY Chief Mark Ferran said all 120 elevators in the complex were stuck and 25 people were rescued from them.

Ferran also said that the complex is home to approximately 45 partially incapacitated residents and that there are some residents that depend on life support. He said crews were still checking on them as power was being restored.

Fifty-four workers were trapped on scaffolding, Ferran said.

Rochdale Village generates its own electricity, heating, air-conditioning, and hot water services.

Fire officials have said it is still unclear what caused the outage, and that although the buildings do have back-up generators, not all systems were working.
