New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (center) thanked members of the Bronx Arterial Maintenance unit of the DOT’s Roadway, Repair and Maintenance Division at City Hall on Monday. ‘You just helped to create a miracle here,’ de Blasio told the group, who helped a plane carrying three people make a safe landing on the Major Deegan Expressway Saturday.

Six Department of Transportation workers whose actions allowed a small plane to make a safe emergency landing on the Major Deegan Expressway Saturday got thanks from Mayor de Blasio Monday.

“You just helped to create a miracle here,” de Blasio told the group at City Hall.

“This is not something you drill for. This is not part of the job description,” he said. “You saved lives.”

Miguel Lopez described how the DOT crew — on their way to repair potholes on the road — sprung into action when they saw the plane in distress.

“‘There’s an airplane coming down!’” one of the workmen yelled, he recalled. “When we saw what was happening we went up front and cut off the rest of the traffic.”

And yes, he said — they went on to fill those potholes later in the day.

Three people on the plane, a 50-year-old man and two women, ages 43 and 20, walked away with no life-threatening injuries, authorities say.
