Rep. Michael Grimm meets with Staten Island residents affected by Hurricane Sandy to call for more relief for homeowners.
Grimm says he wants the state and federal governments to expand a home buyback program that turns whole neighborhoods into parks or other open spaces.
He’s also asking for the state to provide more grants for home elevation and construction, an alternative to a buyout.
“I think we’re thinking small. I really think we’re missing the big picture and missing an opportunity to completely revitalize these areas in a way that we work with Mother Nature and we live with the water instead of just trying to keep it out,” Grimm said.
Grimm also wants a city planner who specializes in waterfront communities to assess which areas should be kept as open space and which are safe enough to remain residential.
