New surveillance video released Tuesday shows the events leading up to Avonte Oquendo’s disappearance from his Long Island City school last year.
The video shows an adult walking down the hallway of the Riverview school and out of the building back on October 4, 2013.
It’s unclear if it’s a parent or a faculty member, but when they leave the door is left slightly ajar.
About 33 minutes later, the door is still open, and that’s when the 14-year-old runs toward the light, through the open door and out of the school.
Three minutes after Avonte runs out of the school, a school safety officer comes to close the door.
The Oquendo family attorney who released the video says it only solves one piece of the puzzle.
“How does a door stay open like that for 30 minutes? Second of all, why did the safety agent leave it like that for 30 minutes? And why did the school safety agent come over and close it three minutes after Avonte walked out?” said Attorney David Perecman.
The video was given to the attorney by the city Department of Education.
School safety agents fall under the watch of the New York City Police Department.
