East River Tunnel Fire Disrupts LIRR Service


Smoke in the East River Tunnel caused by a cable fire is affecting Long Island Railroad service.


Service is suspended westbound from Jamaica to Penn Station and from Woodside, Queens to Penn Station on the Port Washington Branch.


LIRR fares are being honored for the E Train at Jamaica, Kew Gardens and Forest Hills stops; 7 train at Woodisde and Hunterspoint Avenue stops; and 2 and 3 trains at Atlantic (Brooklyn) and Penn Station stops.


The fire department put out the fire and the smoke has cleared.


The Metropolitan Transportation Authority expects service to return to normal by 4 p.m.
