A young boy was killed during a fire that tore through a house in Queens on New Year’s Day.
The fire broke out around 9 a.m. Wednesday morning on the first floor of the house on 90th Street in Elmhurst.
That’s where firefighters found the body of the 7-year-old boy.
The flames spread quickly to the second floor.
A 13-year-old inside was also seriously burned and had to be rushed to the hospital. He is listed in stable condition.
There were at least three adults in the house at the time of the fire.
Firefighters had to enter the house through the flames to get to the victims.
“The firefighters were met with fire right at the front door. It took them a while to douse the flames and enter the building and perform search and rescue,” said FDNY Assistant Fire Chief Ronald Spadafora.
“It’s always surprising when something like this happens after a holiday or anything. It’s not a good way to start the New Year for anybody. To know that it’s one of our neighbors that is suffering this tragedy, no it’s not a good thing,” said neighbor Jonathan Orihuela.
About 50 firefighters were on scene to fight the blaze. Three suffered minor injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
