Frigid Day a Challenge For City’s Outdoor Workers

While it would be a luxury to take a day off to avoid the cold, some New Yorkers have no choice but to brave the elements.

Workers at plants such as the Owl’s Head Wastewater Treatment Plant in South Brooklyn make sure key internal functions at the facility go as smoothly as possible.

One worker says that while today’s brutal weather makes it difficult, it’s just another day at the plant.

“Just like any other day, they’re operating mechanical equipment: gates, valves, pumps. They’re checking gauges and meters to make sure that the equipment is working properly. Obviously, on a day like this where you get some icing on equipment, they’re making sure that things are moving and functioning properly,” said DEP Deputy Commissioner Vincent Sapienza.

The Owl’s Head Plant takes in wastewater from a 13,000 acre area of Brooklyn from more than 750,000 residents.

It can treat up to 120 million gallons of water a day.
