A straphanger was crushed to death by an incoming train in a Manhattan subway station Monday after she apparently fell onto the tracks, officials said.
The 52-year-old woman may have been intoxicated, causing her to tumble from the platform as she waited for a J train at the Essex St. station on the Lower East Side about 5:45 p.m., police sources said.

Investigators do not believe the woman tried to take her life.
Emergency workers rushed to the station and ordered technicians to kill the power to the tracks, but by the time they reached her it was too late, officials said.
