Mayor, Union Leaders Vow to Pass Tax For Universal Pre-K

With the heads of several unions in attendance, Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday made his push for universal pre-kindergarten in the city.

Union leaders stood at the podium touting the importance of universal pre-k as well as funded after school programs.

They all spoke about the need for the programs which would both get the city’s school kids off on the right foot, and take some of the burden off of working class families currently for similar programs out of their own pockets.

“Labor is standing here saying we need to get this done. We need additional revenue source, and a dedicated funding line. Once the families of the city have access to all day pre-k that that access remains forever,” said United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew.

“We will pass this tax in Albany to guarantee full day pre-k for every child in this city and to guarantee after school for every middle child. I will repeat it and repeat it and repeat it again until it’s done,” de Blasio said.

The mayor will travel to Albany on Wednesday to attend Governor Andrew Cuomo’s State of the State address.

That visit could give the mayor the chance he needs to discuss the plan with the governor.
