Broadway theaters dimmed their lights Friday in honor of Elaine Stritch.
Stritch died Thursday at her home in Birmingham, Michigan.
She was born in 1925 and made her Broadway debut in 1946.
Fans of Stritch gathered Friday night to pay tribute to the Broadway star.
“The Broadhurst is where she played in Noel Coward’s ‘Sail Away’ in 1961, and it was a major part for her,” said one fan.
“She was like the only human being that was closest to the Energizer battery that ever existed,” said another fan.
Stritch performed in nearly 20 Broadway shows throughout her career, including Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Company,” where she originated the role of Joanne.
She also appeared in movies and on TV, and won three Emmys, including one for her role as Alec Baldwin’s mother on “30 Rock.”
Elaine Stritch was 89 years old.
