Sources: Police Officer Recently Reassigned to Streets Shoots Suspect in Brooklyn

A police officer who sources say was recently reassigned to the streets shot a suspect Thursday evening who police say was trying to avoid a traffic stop in Brooklyn.

According to the New York City Police Department, 46-year-old Raymond Martinez refused to stop for officers after they say he ran a red light Thursday night on Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie.

Officials say he then hit multiple parked cars and allegedly hit a police department vehicle.

NY1 is told that police officer James Hasper, who sources say is part of the Summer All Out initiative to combat street violence, was just about to start his shift a few blocks away when he saw the incident unfold.

Police say he is the one who opened fire and hit Martinez in the shoulder.

“I heard one shot, and I came out, and he had that one wound on his right shoulder,” said one witness at the scene.

Martinez was taken to the hospital. He’s said to be in stable condition.

Police say his charges are pending.
