A day after the City Comptroller announced concerns about pre-k, Mayor Bill de Blasio is touting the city’s work to get facilities ready for the start of school next week.
The mayor announced that 50,407 students are currently enrolled in universal pre-k.
He said the city would reach the goal it set of 53,000 kids during September.
The mayor said the hard work of elected officials and the cooperation of countless agencies is to thank for the success of the program. He also said special teams have been working all summer to make sure the facilities are safe for students.
“Eleven-hundred plus sites around the city. You might ask the obvious question, ‘How many have an outstanding health violation that we’re working on right now.’ Grand total, all five boroughs, five sites,” De Blasio said.
“Nothing ever caused me more concern than the safety and welfare whether I was a teacher a principal or a superintendent and I can assure you that I’m looking at the pre-k as if every child was my grandchild,” said Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina.
On Wednesday, City Comptroller Scott Stringer said the city had fallen behind in providing information to his office so he could give sites a final safety approval.
