The Upper East Side is one of the most generous neighborhoods in the country, doling out more than $ 631 million in charity in 2012, a study has found.
The affluent neighborhood helped New York state become the second most giving in the nation with $ 15.6 billion in total charitable donations by residents, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reported.
It was behind only California, which totaled $ 22.7 million.
The New York City metro area, meanwhile, gave $ 17.4 billion to charitable organizations in 2012.
The average charitable donation in Manhattan was $ 2,595 a person, with residents giving an average of 3.85 percent of their income, according to the study, which broke down areas by ZIP code.
But the overall trend for charitable giving was on the decline, as wealthier Americans donated less of their money over the years from 2006 to 2012.
Over the same period, middle-class and poor people donated more of their dough to good causes.
Americans who earned $ 200,000 or more reduced the share of their income they gave to charity by 4.5 percent from 2006 to 2012.
Those who made $ 100,000 to $ 200,000 decreased their donations over that period by 3.3 percent, the study said.
But those making $ 25,000 or less a year actually increased their charitable giving by 16.6 percent. And people making $ 25,000 to $ 50,000 across America increased their donations by 8.7 percent.
Some large cities saw drastic drop-offs in donations among their citizens. For example, Buffalo’s charitable donations dropped 10.6 percent and Philadelphia’s fell 10.3 percent.
Although it citizens donated more than others, New York City also saw a decrease in charitable donations from 2006 to 2012, with a drop of 8.7 percent.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s analysis was based on tax returns filed by Americans who itemized their deductions, including their charitable gifts.
Rankings were compiled for states and metropolitan areas based on the ratio of contributions to adjusted gross income.
