A large industrial truck crashed after exiting the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx Monday night and smashed into the front of a three-story home on Cedar Ave.

A large industrial truck crashed Monday night while exiting the Major Deegan Expressway, hitting multiple cars before slamming into a residential building, killing the driver and injuring several others.

The out-of-control truck wound up smashing into the front of a three-story building on Cedar Ave. in University Heights about 6:20 p.m. The impact caused the building’s front wall to partially collapse, officials said.

Emergency responders used K-9 units to search the structure to evacuate anyone inside. There were unconfirmed initial reports of at least one person trapped on the building’s uppermost floor. Officials said the building, which is located along the highway near W. 179th St., was evacuated but they could not say how many people were removed from the home or whether any of them needed to be rescued.

FDNY officials said the driver of the truck died in the crash. The person’s name was not released. Officials said that two other people were taken to Bronx Lebanon Hospital in serious but stable condition, and that two more were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A firefighter also suffered minor injuries.

There were fears initially that the building might collapse.

The truck, which is used in cement pumping projects but looks more like a crane than a mixer, rumbled off the Major Deegan exit ramp at W. 179th St. and hit several cars before running headlong into the residence on Cedar Ave., police sources said.

“It was dragging cars underneath it,” said Antoinette Wilson, a local resident who described the sound of the truck hitting the building as being like an “earthquake.”

“I live down the block and felt the vibration all the way on the fifth floor,” the 34-year-old mother told The News. “My kids came running and they said, ‘Mommy, did you hear that?’ They thought it was a train that crashed.”

Rita Mensah, 41, who lives two houses down from the damaged building, said she was preparing to go to work — only to have her white Nissan Altima completely destroyed.

“I was in my house getting ready when I heard a big crash, like a bomb,” Mensah said, noting she ran downstairs to make sure her kids were safe. “I came to the front of the house … I was trying to figure out what was going on. I’ve already seen my car. It’s completely smashed.”

Police officials said the accident is under investigation.
