A top aide to the Rev. Al Sharpton will be getting $ 170,000 a year from taxpayers to serve as chief of staff to Chirlane McCray, Mayor de Blasio’s wife.
The mayor confirmed the prominent position that his wife is set to play at City Hall with the appointment of Rachel Noerdlinger, who has worked for Sharpton since 1999.
“Chirlane is my partner in all I do — I’ve said that for the last year,” de Blasio told reporters said after a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at Sharpton’s National Action Network in Harlem.
“I’m proud of that fact. And it’s going to allow us to do a lot of good for the people of New York City.”
Noerdlinger’s salary of $ 170,000 puts her within range of some lower-level commissioners who run entire agencies and make $ 192,000.
The mayor refused to say more about McCray’s specific duties and did not address a report in The Post that McCray is poised to get office space inside City Hall. He said staffing for his wife would be based on the model of New York’s most recent first lady, ex-Mayor Giuliani’s wife, Donna Hanover. — who Hanover was served by four staff members at an annual cost to taxpayers of $ 300,000 and had an office inside Gracie Mansion until her relationship with Giuliani went sour.
City Hall officials later confirmed that McCray would not receive a salary and that they didn’t expect her staffing needs to be large.
