Governor Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday announced a plan to fund statewide universal pre-kindergarten in his 2014-2015 budget.
This would make New York the fourth state in the country to fund universal pre-K services.
The governor says the plan will include $ 1.5 billion over next five years or approximately $ 300 million every year.
His plans for education also include a fully funded five year robust after school program
“The state will pay for it and the state will be proud to pay for it. It’s a priority we believe in children. we believe in pre-K. We believe in education. Let’s put our money where our mouth is,” Cuomo said.
The governor also touched on the hospital crisis in Brooklyn where several hospitals are facing closure.
He says the state can no longer afford to prop up the system.
He’s hoping the federal government will provide a special waiver to reimburse the state.
Cuomo also addressed the current spate of reports of sexual harassment in the State Assembly.
He wants JCOPE to provide a confidential hotline for complaints about sexual harassment.
The governor hopes the budget can pass without issue.
He says the last time four budgets were passed in a row was 1973 under the Governor Rockefeller administration.
