Just days after Mayor Bill de Blasio launched his Vision Zero initiative aimed at cutting traffic-accident related deaths, the number of road fatalities continues to rise.
Early this morning, a cyclist was struck and killed by a bus in Harlem.
Police say 45-year-old Pedro Santiago was riding his bike along West 125th Street near Lenox Avenue when he crossed in front of the Bx15 bus heading in the same direction.
According to officials, Santiago hit the driver’s side of the bus, near the front tires, and was pinned. He was taken to Harlem hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The MTA says the bus driver was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital to be checked out.
Police say there were less than a handful of people on the bus, none were injured.
