It’s still not clear what caused a fire Sunday in a Manhattan high-rise that killed one man and sent his husband to the hospital.
The fire broke out shortly after 11 a.m. inside an unoccupied apartment on the 20th floor of The Strand apartment building located at 500 West 43rd Street.
Investigators say Michael Todd Cohen, 32, and Daniel McClung, 27, were found in the stairwell on the 31st floor.
McClung was taken to St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital where he later died.
Cohen is recovering at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
The two men were apparently overcome by smoke.
Fire officials say residents of high-rise buildings like The Strand should not try to escape during a fire.
“Many people self-evacuated. We try to give advice to stay in the apartment. In these types of buildings it’s very important to stay in the apartment, in a fire-proof high-rise building designed to prevent fire extension,” said FDNY Assistant Chief John Sudnick.
It took firefighters nearly two hours to get the flames under control.
Seven other people suffered minor injuries.
