Ken Whisenhunt, fired as Cardinals head coach at the end of the 2012 season, is a hot candidate now that he’s revamped Philip Rivers’ game as the Chargers offensive coordinator in 2013.

Ken Whisenhunt likely will get a second crack at a head coaching gig in the NFL.

According to ESPN, Whisenhunt has the inside track on the vacant Detroit Lions job . The report said the job is his “to lose.”

The current San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator spent six seasons as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, guiding them to their first ever Super Bowl appearance after the 2008 regular season. The Cardinals lost Super Bowl XLIII to the Steelers, with whom Whisenhunt had spent the previous six years as a tight ends coach and offensive coordinator.

Whisenhunt was fired by Arizona at the end of last season after a third straight non-playoff campaign. He finished with a 45-51 regular season record.

The Lions made Jim Schwartz a Black Monday casualty after Detroit lost six of its final seven games to miss the playoffs at 7-9. Whisenhunt and Lions general manager Martin Mayhew played together on the Washington Redskins in 1989 and 1990, and Whisenhunt told the Detroit Free Press Thursday that the two are “good friends.”

Whisenhunt has helped revitalize Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers after his performance dipped the past two seasons. Rivers completed a career-high 69.5 percent of his passes in 2013 and had 4,413 yards passing with 32 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Rivers had 35 total interceptions over the previous two years.

ESPN also reported that Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden is on Detroit’s list of potential head coaching candidates. The Bengals and Chargers are squaring off Sunday in an AFC Wild Card matchup.
