New Yorkers Brace for Cold as Storm Effects Linger

New Yorkers are bundling up as temperatures remain well below freezing on Thursday.

Traffic officers, street vendors and contractors working on major infrastructure projects including the water main break near Union Square were out working in the cold on Thursday.

Those forced to face the cold for long hours said the trick to staying warm is to wear multiple layers, keep moving and take breaks in warm locations frequently.

One deliveryman said having a family to support is good motivation while a coffee vendor in Greenwich Village said he gets some comfort from the equipment around him.

“The machines come heated,” he said.

“Oh my god, so brave. It’s so sad, but they’re troopers, you know, they troop it through. If I could walk around and give them all money I would,” said one woman walking in the cold in Greenwich Village.

Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing every day this week except Saturday, which may rise just above the freezing mark. But another blanket of cold is expected to settle in next week.

Alternate side parking rules are suspended again on Thursday due to another day of cold conditions and slushy streets.
