This guy’s plan went up in smoke.
State investigators cuffed a Brooklyn man who they said wanted to flood the market with more than 30,000 untaxed cigarettes, officials said.
Members of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Cigarette Strike Force snuffed out Farouq Al-Mathil’s plans to sell the untaxed smokes when they arrested him Monday near a Red Hook storage facility on Lorraine St.
He had 898 cartons of brand-name cigarettes — with a street value of $ 89,000 — and $ 5,500 in his possession when he got pinched, officials said.
The cigarettes had either a fake New York State and New York City cigarette tax stamp or a Virginia tax stamp, officials said.
Al-Mathil was arrested on multiple felonies, including criminal tax fraud and possession of illegal cigarettes, officials said.
Attempts to reach Al-Mathil’s attorney was unsuccessful Wednesday afternoon.
