NY1 Exclusive: NYPD Investigating Complaints of Credit Card Fraud Following Muni Meter Use

The New York City Police Department continues to be worried about credit card skimming devices being placed on ATMs and other machines across the five boroughs, and now, NY1 has learned that police are investigating if those devices are now targeting Muni Meters.

NY1 has learned that police are investigating complaints from three residents in Brooklyn’s 61st Precinct who say their cards were compromised, allegedly after using Muni Meters.

NY1 is told that no devices were found on any of the Muni Meters, but officers are asking their colleagues, as well as traffic agents, to be looking at those Muni Meters closely to see if they can find any recording devices or skimming devices.

“When you’re using a Muni Meter, it could be somebody looking over your shoulder, somebody next to you. It could be somebody across the street with a camera. It could be somebody across the street sitting in a car with binoculars,” said Inspector James Klein of the NYPD Crime Prevention Section.

Skimming devices get information from the black bar on the back of the card, and sometimes, a camera is nearby that picks up a PIN code, which can give scammers all of a person’s information.

In recent months, devices have been found at LIRR stations and subway stations where commuters purchase MetroCards and tickets.

The NYPD said it’s on to several rings that are coming into the country to steal credit card information.

“These rings are organized crime. They come from Eastern European countries, for the most part, Albania, Romania,” Klein said. “They’ll fly here to New York, and then they’ll go to Chicago, then they’ll go to L.A., and they’ll make their rounds around the country, and they switch teams, they switch players on the teams, and then they’ll fly back out.”

The NYPD said if you’re using a keypad, cover it with your hand when you’re putting in your information.
