Cuomo in quandary over city’s plan to issue municipal IDs

ALBANY — New York City’s plan to issue municipal IDs has put Gov. Cuomo in a political jam.

Cuomo has yet to take a position on the IDs advocated by progressives, including his new pals in the Working Families Party.

The IDs have the support of the City Council and Mayor de Blasio. But sources said Cuomo — up for re-election this year — is wary about coming out in support because he fears an upstate backlash.

That’s what happened in 2007, when former Gov. Eliot Spitzer made a proposal to offer driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants.

One of the loudest opponents of the Spitzer plan was Cuomo’s now-running mate for lieutenant governor, Kathy Hochul, who at the time was Erie County clerk.

“In the absence of federal immigration reform this issue has fallen to localities,” said Cuomo spokesman Richard Azzopardi after The Post’s attempts over two days to get the governor’s position. “We will review any statewide proposal and will continue closely monitor actions taken by local governments.”

Several attempts to contact Hochul were unsuccessful Friday.
