Brooklyn community leaders are calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo and other state officials to halt the sale of Long Island College Hospital and investigate the process that led to the deal.
SUNY plans to hand over LICH to Fortis Property Group on Monday after it said two other groups failed to meet its demands.
Fortis’ proposal includes an emergency department and other health services, but not a full-service hospital, which was a top demand from the community surrounding the facility.
Protestors said Cuomo, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli need to investigate whether SUNY gave preferential treatment to Fortis.
“The process by which all bidders were denied, other than the real estate developer Fortis, is a bogus process,” said Jeff Strabone of the Cobble Hill Association.
“Governor Cuomo, you have the power, you have the authority to stop this behavior by SUNY officials,” said the Rev. Dr. Johnnie Green, president and chair of Mobilizing Preachers and Community.
Community advocates said the area already doesn’t have enough health care resources and can’t afford losing hospital beds.
