The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Wednesday approved a 10-year deal with Boingo Wireless to provide free Internet service at JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Stewart Airports.
Under the terms of the deal, users would get 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi.
After that, they could pay a $ 7.95 daily fee or a $ 9.95 monthly fee.
Right now, travelers pay $ 4.95 an hour for the service.
The group that was created to address the challenges of the region’s airports, the Global Gateway Alliance, says the lack of free Wi-Fi has held area airports back.
Fliers who spoke with NY1 at LaGuardia say it’s about time an effort was made to upgrade Wi-Fi offerings.
“Sometimes I’m working while I’m here if I can. If I can do it on the plane I’ll do it on the plane. Not all the airlines offer that yet. But I definitely would use it,” said one traveler.
“It’d be great, I think a lot of other airports offer it. So I’m very surprised that big city New York City wouldn’t offer Wi-Fi,” said another traveler.
“A world class like New York shouldn’t have that kind of situation,” noted a third traveler.
Governor Andrew Cuomo urged the Port Authority to approve the deal. He wants the agency to do more to modernize the city’s airports to catch up with others around the world.
The deal also calls for Boingo to make nearly $ 4 million in upgrades to Internet speed and signal connections at all four Port Authority airports. In exchange, they would receive a slightly larger cut of the revenue generated.
