Police Seek Suspect in Connection with Man’s Death After Being Punched

The innocent man attacked with a single punch this weekend in Queens has died and now police want the public’s help identifying the suspect. NY1′s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.

Efren de Leon is still trying to come to terms with his loss.

“I cannot accept this died right now,” de Leon said.

His friend Roberto Martirez has died.

“I’m not imagine he pass away, because, you know, I’m very painful in my heart,” de Leon said.

Loved ones say late Saturday night, the 56-year-old father of two adult children stopped on Roosevelt avenue at 69th street—after work as a private driver—to get a cup of coffee.

He was walking home and a witness told friends Martirez didn’t do anything wrong.

“He’s not a trouble maker. He drink only coffee then suddenly he go back to the house Suddenly, there is one guy. He says, ‘are you Filipino?’ Say my friend, ‘Yes.’ He punch him one time—strong one. Then, falling down,” de Leon said.

Martirez died Tuesday morning in the hospital after suffering head trauma.

“We’re very close, close family friends and he’s a good man, and as far as I know, he lives peaceful with everyone,” said Pastor Benjamin Ytac of Yeshua Worldwide Ministries.

Friends built a small memorial to Martirez at the scene of the crime.

Police have stapled wanted posters around the neighborhood.

Detectives say the suspect is in his early to mid 20′s with facial hair, last seen wearing blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a dark baseball cap.

“The only thing we’re asking for is a real justice for him,” said Celia Mangao, a friend of the victim.

Neighbors in the area say they are concerned for their own safety.

They certainly want to see the person responsible for this attack caught.

The police have released a photo of a man with whom they want to speak.
