Soccer fans across the city are tuning in as the U.S. soccer team takes on the heavily favored team from Germany today.
Fans who packed Jack Demsey’s in Midtown early Thursday grabbed their coveted spots for the match, with some even playing hooky from work.
“America needs us here, this is the official soccer bar of U.S. men’s national soccer New York. We gotta be here,” said one soccer fan.
“Well we looked really good versus Portugal. If we bring that same energy and ball possession I absolutely think we’ll at least come away with a tie and that’s enough to get us through the round of 16,” said another soccer fan.
The U.S. is currently facing off against heavily favored Germany.
The Americans need a win or tie to guarantee a spot in the next round.
The United States nearly clinched Sunday, but had to settle for a tie after Portugal scored with just seconds remaining.
The U.S. could still advance even if they lose to Germany — if Ghana and Portugal play to a draw.
The only way the Americans would be eliminated is if they lose and the winner of the Ghana/Portugal game ends up with a better goal differential.
Meanwhile, state employees have been granted an extra-long lunch hour to root on Team USA. Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent a letter to the team’s coach in which he wished them good luck, adding that he approved an extended lunch period to state employees could watch the game.
