A man was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver as he crossed a Brooklyn street Saturday morning, police said.
The man, who police said was in his thirties, had just left the Gather Inn Again bar in Gerritsen Beach and was crossing the street near Everett Ave. to go to his car when a speeding vehicle heading south veered across the yellow lines and hit him, witnesses said.
The driver then sped away, police said.
The impact threw the man’s body several yards onto a grassy area next to the street, witnesses said.
Emergency responders rushed the critically injured man to Beth Israel Hospital, but he could not be saved.
Bartender Allyson A., 33, said the victim had grown up in the close-knit community.
“I was with him for three hours at the bar, he only had one drink…I said goodbye to him as he left, and that was it,” she said.
“He was the best,” she added. “He walked with a limp. That’s why it took him so long to get across the street.”
Locals noted drivers tend to speed on that particular stretch of the avenue, which doesn’t have a traffic light for several blocks
Police apprehended a man they believed to be the driver shortly after the collision.
