Students injured in high school science class blast


A high school science experiment went wrong caused an explosion Thursday at a school on the Upper West Side and seriously injured two students, authorities said.


“There was an explosion that reportedly caused burns to the face and neck of one 10th grader and caused burns to the hand of another 10th grader. Parents were notified. The principal is investigating the incident,” a spokeswoman from the department of education said.


Fire officials got the call just after 9 a.m. and rushed to the science room at the Beacon School on 61st St. near West End Ave., officials said.


Both sophomores were rushed to Cornell Medical center. One suffered serious burns and the second was listed in stable condition but both are expected to survive, authorities said.


The school was not evacuated after the explosion, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education said.
