The Rangers are heading back home after losing a wild Game 5 in Montreal 7-4 Tuesday night.
New York erased a 4-1 deficit in second period and tied the game at four, but the Canadiens followed with three unanswered goals of their own to win 7-4 and cut the Rangers’ lead in the series to 3 games to 2.
Ranger forward Derek Stepan returned to action wearing a protective device on his helmet after missing Game 4 with a broken jaw, and scored the two goals in the game, including a first-period tally that tied the game 1-1.
Montreal then scored three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead in the second period and knock Henrik Lundqvist out of the game.
The Blueshirts stormed back with three straight goals to tie it, but less than a minute later, the Canadiens regained the lead against Rangers backup Cam Talbot and never looked back.
Rene Bourque led the way for Montreal with a hat trick.
The Blueshirts will have another chance to earn a spot in the finals Thursday night at home in game 6.
The wild game had fans on a roller coaster of emotions throughout.
Once it was over, fans who watched at the Rangers’ official watch party in the city were disappointed, but still believed that the Rangers will get past Montreal.
“I lost my voice. That’s how good I was feeling. It was exciting. It was thrilling. They scored three goals in such a short period of time. I really thought they were going to come back,” said one fan. “And then it was heartbreaking.”
“I know this is our year. It’s been 20 years,” said another fan. “We just want to win it at home. I want to see that trophy on our ice.”
The winner of this series will face either the Chicago Blackhawks or Los Angeles Kings in the finals.
L.A. leads that series 3-1 and can wrap it up with a win Wednesday night in Chicago.
