Mayor Bill de Blasio laid wreaths at the The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on his first Memorial Day in office.
The mayor and other officials laid three wreaths: one for soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, a second for Vietnam and World War Two, and the third for military personnel lost in all other wars.
The mayor also made a vow to ensure there were no homeless veterans in the city, and called on businesses to work to employ veterans.
He says it’s all about giving thanks.
“I hope all of you who’ve been here for fleet week, you recognize the welcome extended to you by the people of New York City. It’s out of deep appreciation. It’s out of deep understanding of all you do, the sacrifices you make, the risks you take for all of us. So on behalf of all 8.4 million New Yorkers, I want to say to all our men and women in uniform, a profound thank you and God bless you for what you do for this country,” the mayor said.
The events also included the unfurling of a 100 foot American flag and a military flyover in the missing man formation.
