Twenty years after the New York Rangers last won the Stanley Cup, the Blueshirts are heading back to the Finals.
Henrik Lundqvist shut out the Canadians 1-0 at Madison Square Garden Thursday night to eliminate Montreal four games to two in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Dominic Moore scored off a Brian Boyle feed late in the second period to give the Rangers the only goal they would need, as Lundqvist stopped all 18 Montreal shots.
After the final horn sounded, alternate captains Marc Staal, Brad Richards and Dan Girardi accepted the Prince of Wales Trophy as the Garden crowd chanted “We want the Cup!”
The Rangers will face either the Chicago Blackhawks or Los Angeles Kings when the Stanley Cup Finals begin on Wednesday. Los Angeles leads the Western Conference Finals three games to two with Game 6 set for Friday night.
The Blueshirts will play in the Finals for the first time since winning the Cup in 1994. It will be their fourth Finals appearance in the last 60 years, after losing in the Finals to Montreal in 1979 and the Boston Bruins in 1972.
