Hundreds Give US Men’s Soccer Team a Times Square Sendoff

Hockey fans aren’t the only ones in the city gearing up for an exciting June.

The United States Men’s National Soccer Team will head to Brazil next month to compete in the World Cup, and hundreds of fans gathered in Times Square Friday to give the team a big sendoff.

“I’m going to Brazil for the World Cup. We’re going to watch the U.S. play against Ghana June 16,” said one person who attended the rally.

“I think soccer has taken over in this country far more so than general sports folks give it credit for,” said another.

“Played some really good soccer in the past. This is the year to break through, I think,” said a third.

Team USA will have an exhibition match with Turkey in New Jersey Sunday before heading south.

The U.S. is in a group with Ghana, Portugal and Germany.
