A whole class of graduating seniors was denied its diplomas after some students threw their caps into the air when warned not to do so.

Pupils at Ridgewood High School, in the northwest Norridge suburb of Chicago, were dubbed “disrespectful” for their commencement ceremony stunt on Tuesday.

And administrators have now said they will only hand out the official certificates if those responsible publicly apologize.

“The gym is decorated; people dress up (some of them); we expect dignified behavior,” school Superintendent Dr. Robert Lupo wrote about the punishment on his blog.

“Secondly, it is an indoor event. In past ceremonies, people have been hit by flying caps. We’d just as soon not have graduates leaving with cuts and black eyes,” he said.

“Perhaps it is the final lesson they will take away from high school: there are consequences for behaviors in life,” he added.

The decision has sparked anger among students and parents, with mom Mary Sticha saying she firmly supports the youngsters.

“It was kind of silly they would request them not to. It wasn’t a way to disrespect anyone, it was just a way to do something together and celebrate the end of the year,” she said.

And senior Jackie Rios added: “I just think it’s really ridiculous. We worked so hard to get to this point.”
