Twenty-one City Council members made a final push for a rent freeze before Monday night’s vote of the Rent Guidelines Board.
“This year, striking a fair balance means voting for a rent freeze,” wrote City Councilman Ben Kallos (D-Manhattan) and colleagues from all five boroughs in a letter to the board.
The board sets rents for the city’s roughly 1 million rent-stabilized tenants and last month voted for a rent hike somewhere between 0% and 3%, dangling the possibility of its first-ever rent freeze.
The Council members argue that in recent years the board has overestimated landlords’ costs by 13%, voting for increases that tenants struggle to pay.
