A Department of Investigation inquiry has determined former Brooklyn district attorney Charles Hynes used money seized from drug dealers and other criminal defendants to pay a political consultant for work on his re-election campaign, according to a report by the New York Times.
The consultant was allegedly paid more than $ 200,000.
Hynes could face larceny charges for the misuse of public funds.
Since November, investigators reportedly reviewed about 6,000 emails for the 18-month period before the 2013 general election.
The Times also reports Barry Kamins, the administrative judge for New York City’s criminal courts, was fired for engaging in political activity by advising Hynes on his campaign.
The report has been referred to the state attorney general. He declined comment.
Hynes also did not respond to the Times’ request for comment.
