The Port Authority on Tuesday held a full scale emergency drill at JFK airport to test the ability of first responders during a simulated accident of a passenger aircraft.
More than 400 emergency service workers were on scene.
Port Authority Chief of Police Louis Koumoutsos says the exercise took a year to plan, to make sure things are as realisitc as possible.
“Everything has to be vetted, everything has to be opened up and analyzed very carefully as we proceed. Certainly to serve and protect is what we do and our response is predicated on casualties, obstructions in our runway, possible debris and so on and so forth. So all these factors are flowing into this equation. And you know what? My theory as I said to the others is practice makes perfect,” Koumoutsos said.
The exercise included members of the Port Authority Police Department, Port Authority Office of Emergency Management, JFK Airport and Delta Airlines staff along with the police and fire departments and a host of federal agencies.
