In a time of crisis, people can fall apart or they can pull together.

The 2012-13 school year was a time of crisis for our school, Scholars’ Academy, because of superstorm Sandy. The damage to our school building in Rockaway Park, Queens, and the surrounding area was devastating.

About 60% of our students became homeless. Likewise for our staff. People could’ve fallen apart. People could’ve made excuses. But what we saw was the opposite.

The entire staff and all of our students and their families pulled together in short order and in a huge variety of ways. In many ways, our 100% graduation rate is a testament to the families of our students and our community.

Brian O’Connell is principal of Scholars’ Academy.
