Cyclists and pedestrians have a safer and easier way to cross Shore Road when they’re shuttling between Owls Head Park and the Shore Parkway Greenway.

The city has finally completed some long-sought safety fixes on the dangerous Bay Ridge intersection, narrowing the roadway that leads onto the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway at the intersection of Shore Road and 68th St.

Cycling advocates and Community Board members have been pushing for the measures for years.

Sidewalks were widened to reduce crossing distances and 10-foot-wide pedestrian and bicycle crossings were added to both sides of Shore Road, along with new pavement markings for bike lanes.

Cyclists cheered the changes, but said more was needed to curtail lead-footed motorists.

“It’s significantly better to cross because of the sidewalk extension,” said bicyclist Gene Aronowitz, 76, of Sunset Park. “But it would be perfect if there was a stop sign there.”

Cyclists and pedestrians have to cross Shore Road. in order to get from the Shore Parkway Greenway, which wraps around Southern Brooklyn, to the bike path and walkway around Owls Head Park.

The Department of Transportation said it is studying additional safety measures at the intersection. A spokesman for the Department of Design and Construction said the safety fixes were years in the making and could not specify the project cost.
